Tax Accountant II - Sales and Use Tax

Position Summary:
Responsibilities include the sales/use tax support of a dynamic multi-state environment that includes completion of Sales/Use tax registrations, maintenance of sales/use tax exemption certificates, monthly filings, compliance, and audits. The position requires strong tax research skills, as well as solid application and project management skills in order to support the varied business activities that impact the collection and reporting of sales/use taxes.  Additionally, the position will be tasked with assisting the Manager - Sales and Tax with tax planning projects. 
Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
  • Oversee and manage the issuance and receipt of all documentation required to support tax-exempt transactions.
  • Oversee and manage the complete controls review of the monthly submission of all states Sales and Use tax reporting and payments (monthly compliance reports are prepared by a third party).  Work includes that monthly preparation of data to be sent to a third party for return preparation and filing, as well as post filing variance review. Ensure that payments are processed so as to meet all deadlines. 
  • Strategize audit defense and support.  Complete sales/use tax assignments related to audit support. Coordinate verbal and written communication with taxing authorities and others as needed. Assist in the initiation and completion of refund claims, as warranted.
  • Ensure company’s compliance with state sales and use tax reporting requirements, laws, and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain taxability matrices to serve as guidance for other departments
  • Monitor changes in tax rates and legislation, update management and team about discovered modifications, and initiate tax policy changes to comply with authoritative requirements
  • Research and resolve all tax notices of assessment timely.
  • Oversee and manage all correspondences and/or inquiries from state Sales and Use tax authorities.
  • Identify and implement tax savings and planning initiatives. Manage reverse sales/use tax recoveries as assigned. Maintain a schedule of savings realized from all efforts.
  • Oversee and manage the research, response and resolution to all Sales and Use tax inquiries from stores, corporate departments, customers, and vendors promptly as they arise. 
  • Oversee and manage the monitoring process of state and local tax rate changes and submit timely to IT for effective date changes.
  • Provide guidance to the business on sales/use tax planning and compliance.
  • Oversee and manage the monitoring of Sales and Use tax treatment on invoices to ensure company compliance.  Communicate with division, store, and corporate personnel to make constructive suggestions on improved invoice coding.
  • Oversee the quarterly review of capital and expense invoices, processing any self-assessments timely in order to minimize audit risk.  Work with the applicable personnel to rectify errors and re-train where appropriate.
  • Oversee the guidance to the applicable business partners in regard to Sales/Use Tax Holidays.  Detailed applicable information should be distributed to personnel in advance of the holidays.
  • Complete all sales/use tax related IT project assignments.  Project work may include participation in design of new systems or reworking of existing systems. 
  • Lead and/or participate in all sales/use tax training efforts.
  • Oversee seasonal requests for budgeting sales/use tax credits.
  • Review assigned general ledger reconciliations on monthly basis including balance sheet analysis.  Assist with the reconciliation of general ledger accounts as assigned.
  • Review tax reserves as needed on a quarterly basis.  Recommend adjustments as required.
  • Perform account reviews and monthly variance analysis, as assigned.
  • Understand process flows of data into the general ledger used in regulatory reporting and work towards improving processing efficiencies. Assume leadership role to recommend ways manual functions and re-keying can be eliminated.
  • Coordinate the established annual affiliate nexus disclosure recertification process
  • Manage assigned SOX documentation and key controls.
  • Follow any job-related instructions requested by supervisor or management.
Requirements/Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree and/or equivalent years of experience
  • 2 or more years of applicable experience
